Internship : Luggage Re-Identification Using 3D Information

Since our founding, IDEMIA has been on a mission to unlock the world and make it safer through our cutting-edge identity technologies. Our technology leadership makes us the partner of choice for hundreds of governments and thousands of enterprises in over 180 countries, including some of the biggest and most influential brands in the world. In applying our unique expertise in biometrics and cryptography, we enable our clients to unlock simpler and safer ways to pay, connect, access, identify, travel and protect public places – at scale and in total security.

Our teams work from 5 continents and speak 100+ different languages. We strongly believe that our diversity is a key driver of innovation and performance.

Purpose

Join IDEMIA’s Research & Technology division, a team of around 100 engineers and researchers driving innovation in areas like facial recognition, fingerprint and iris recognition, fraud detection, video analysis, and document authentication.

This internship focuses on developing a state-of-the-art system for luggage re-identification using 3D data. Traditional 2D methods struggle with viewpoint changes, partial occlusions, and appearance variations over time. Leveraging 3D information can improve accuracy and robustness, supporting critical applications in airport security and baggage handling.

Key Missions

Potential research directions include:

  • Extracting 3D shape descriptors from point clouds or depth maps to enhance object differentiation
  • Designing deep learning embeddings that combine appearance and geometric features for identity matching
  • Investigating multi-camera or multi-sensor setups to associate luggage across different viewpoints
  • Evaluating the system under realistic conditions with varying lighting and partial visibility

Expected Deliverables:

  • A prototype system for luggage re-identification using 3D data
  • Experiments demonstrating performance on benchmark or simulated datasets
  • A detailed report analyzing strengths, limitations, and potential improvements

Profile & Other Information

  • Engineering student in the final year of the engineering cycle, or a Master's student (M2) specializing in computer vision, image processing, or Deep Learning
  • Strong knowledge of computer vision and Deep Learning
  • Proficiency in Python, OpenCV, and PyTorch
  • Solid training in data analysis and software development
  • Proficient in English, both spoken and written (e.g., reading scientific articles in English, presenting work)
  • Curious, proactive, and autonomous
  • Results-oriented and solution-focused
  • Clear and persuasive communication skills
  • Desire to contribute to the complete lifecycle of an algorithm: design, implementation, integration, testing, and optimization
