At IDEMIA, we aim to offer our employees, a dynamic and exciting environment where you have opportunities for career growth and professional development.

Internal mobility is a great way for you to energize your career and to build your personal brand. It’s also a great way to explore other functions, professions or countries as IDEMIA operates in different businesses and in 50+ locations around the world.

Purpose

Context:

Within IDEMIA, the Research & Technology unit plays a key role in developing the technologies of tomorrow, which are integrated across all our product lines.

Comprising around 100 passionate researchers and engineers, the team pushes the boundaries of innovation every day in high-impact domains such as facial recognition, fingerprint and iris recognition, fraud detection, secure acquisition, video analysis, and document recognition and authentication.

Re-identifying luggage across different locations, such as airports or transport hubs, remains a challenging problem due to variations in viewpoint, partial occlusions, and changes in appearance over time. Conventional 2D image-based approaches often struggle to distinguish similar-looking items or maintain identity consistency across multiple cameras. Leveraging 3D information offers a promising solution by capturing the complete geometry of each object, which can significantly improve robustness and accuracy. This research is of strategic importance to Idemia, as it directly supports applications in airport security and baggage handling.

The goal of this internship is to develop a state-of-the-art system for luggage re-identification using 3D data.

The internship will last 6 months, starting in March 2026, and will be based in Courbevoie (La Défense)

Key Missions

Potential research directions include:

- Extracting 3D shape descriptors from point clouds or depth maps to enhance object differentiation.

- Designing deep learning embeddings that combine appearance and geometric features for identity matching.

- Investigating multi-camera or multi-sensor setups to associate luggage across different viewpoints.

- Evaluating the system under realistic conditions with varying lighting and partial visibility.

Expected Deliverables:

- A prototype system for luggage re-identification using 3D data.

- Experiments demonstrating performance on benchmark or simulated datasets.

- A detailed report analyzing strengths, limitations, and potential improvements.
