Research internship in deep learning (image recognition)

Since our founding, IDEMIA has been on a mission to unlock the world and make it safer through our cutting-edge identity technologies. Our technology leadership makes us the partner of choice for hundreds of governments and thousands of enterprises in over 180 countries, including some of the biggest and most influential brands in the world. In applying our unique expertise in biometrics and cryptography, we enable our clients to unlock simpler and safer ways to pay, connect, access, identify, travel and protect public places – at scale and in total security.

Our teams work from 5 continents and speak 100+ different languages. We strongly believe that our diversity is a key driver of innovation and performance.

Purpose

IDEMIA Public Security research unit develops the new technologies used in the group’s products to strengthen digital identity. Around 100 researchers work on facial, fingerprint and iris recognition, fraud detection, video analysis, and document authentication, with the goal of providing highly secure and easy-to-use solutions.

These technologies are used in many areas:

  • Civil identity
  • Border control
  • Police and justice
  • Access control
  • Digital identity on smartphones
  • Biometric cards and embedded devices

IPS also recruits excellent interns in Deep Learning and Computer Vision for 6-month internships. They take part in all steps of scientific research: reviewing the state of the art, preparing data, building models, running experiments, and sometimes contributing to publications or patents. The methods used include machine learning, deep learning (CNNs, GANs), Bayesian approaches, and computer-vision techniques for images and video.

Key Missions

  • Review the state of the art in facial-quality assessment (pose, lighting, occlusion, eye openness, background, blur, etc)
  • Collect and annotate representative datasets, using assisted tools such as foundation models or LLMs
  • Build a robust evaluation framework with appropriate metrics reflecting real-world conditions
  • Train models to estimate facial quality, respecting technical constraints (inference time, memory)
  • Explore innovative approaches (e.g., diffusion models for synthetic data) to improve robustness
  • Ensure fairness of facial-quality predictions across demographic groups
  • Analyze and report model performance clearly
  • Contribute to integrating the developed models into IPS biometric products

Profile & Other Information

  • Engineering student finishing 3rd year or Master 2 student specializing in deep learning and computer vision
  • Good knowledge of image processing, computer vision, deep learning (preferably with PyTorch)
  • Strong background in mathematics and data analysis
  • Proficient in Python (C/C++ is a plus)
  • Experience with image processing libraries is a plus
  • Curious
  • Proactive and autonomous
  • Results and solution-oriented
