Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

Purpose

Responsible for the direction, development, and implementation of all environmental, health & safety (H&S) related compliance programs, including hazardous waste management, air permit requirements, wastewater requirements, environmental regulatory compliance for federal and state, industrial hygiene issues, training, accident prevention and awareness, safety committee development, ISO and OSHA compliance and plant safety award and recognition program.

Key Missions

  • Execute the Company’s H&S Policy and Environmental Policy at a local level, including monitoring, recording and sharing H&S and environmental KPI data.
  • Reduce incidents and accidents by developing and implementing a proactive, sound H&S management system that will improve operator awareness and formalize department and managerial safety awareness.
  • Organize, develop and lead the Workplace Health & Safety Committee.
  • Develop a comprehensive safety audit system for all departments and make recommendations to correct or eliminate hazards.
  • Ensure incident investigations are effective in the identification of root cause and that corrective and preventative actions are implemented in a timely manner.
  • Formulate plant H&S and environmental policies for agreement by management.  Follow through with programs to insure their compliance.
  • Develop, set-up, and train all plant personnel on required safety and environmental measures. Compile and report training figures to the management.
  • Identify all ISO, OSHA and EPA at risk conditions and eliminate.
  • Establish H&S and environmental programs to comply with changes in law that will affect employees or plant operations.
  • Establish annual Safety audits for the plant.  Report findings and correct deficiencies.
  • Compile and maintain current chemical inventory and Material Safety Data Sheets, reports, and related information.
  • Provide and schedule all environmental, safety and chemical handling training.
  • Management of hazardous waste disposal program including maintaining manifests and documentation required to be in compliance with  all relevant local and regional law.

Profile & Other Information

  • Education or training normally associated with a BS in Safety Management, Industrial Safety, or Environmental Regulation.
  • Sound knowledge of ISO, OSHA, and EPA regulations.
  • Ability to provide training and guidance to employees in regards to development of environmental, health and safety programs.
  • Extensive knowledge in applicable safety & environmental regulations as well as knowledge and experience in developing EHS management systems required.
  • Ability to communicate and interface with all departments and levels of management.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated people and business management skills.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience and or similar function.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc)
  • Demonstrated project management skills.

 

Preferred Skills

  • Lean and/or Six Sigma experience a plus.
  • Analytic and problem solving skills.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, matrix organization.
  • Certification in one or more HS&E related disciplines (CSP, CIH, CHMM, etc.) a plus
